What's the ELC?

One of the first things I was assigned to do on Ambergris Cay was work at the ELC, or Environmental Learning Center. A beautiful building located on Salt Rakers Cove, it has windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling, and more. Beautiful though it is, it’s still full of never-ending jobs to do.

As the assistant naturalist to Will Hobbs (the naturalist-super nice) I’m in charge of keeping the ELC clean and its animals healthy. I’m also in charge of opening and closing the ELC for members. I quickly learned to watch out for the hermit crabs, though… They pinch! Hard!

The population of Rock Iguanas is also high at the ELC; I bump into at least two on the path and one on the stairs every time I go there. When I asked why they hardly move when I go right up to them, I was told that they don’t have any predators and so think that they have nothing to fear. That presents a problem when driving, though; I’ve had to stop get out, and yell at them to move almost too many times to count. All right, got to go, it’s time to close up…
